Dr. Moku's Hiragana Mnemonics App Reviews

Misleading.

The pictures to help you memorize hiragana got significantly less creative from the free version to the paid version. There is literally a picture for "ko" with no drawing and a sentence that says "the bottom is a ko-oh of the top." Its definitely not a copy and copy doesnt sound anything like ko sounds in Japanese. Very displeased because this was very expensive. Would like a refund if it was possible.

Best app for learning hiragana!!!

This app helped me to learn hiragana in just 2 days. If you have the determination and want to learn then this app is great!

Amazing!

This app is so helpful. I can actually read Hiragana now, and Im going to be installing the app for Katakana because this worked so well! I highly recommend it to anyone trying to learn Hiragana.

The audio feature does not work.

This app has a feature that enables you to hear the sound of a character when you tap the audio icon. However, the feature is not working properly. Dont be fooled by all the positive reviews. None of the sounds are working, and I made sure that it was not a problem on my end but rather in the application itself.

Amazing

I spent two years stationed in Japan while I was in the military, and I tried flash cards and brute force memorization for countless hours to learn Hiragana. I ended up falling in love with and marrying a Japanese women (how thankfully speaks perfect English). No matter what we tried, I just could not get Hiragana committed to memory. Im not dumb (I like to think anyways - I have a JD and Im a practicing attorney - so I read English extremely well.) Using this app, I got Hiragana down cold in 24 hours. It is plain amazing. Almost every Japanese study course has as "step 1" - memorize hiragana. I wish Id discovered this app years ago - I feel like I can finally get started!

Lightning fast Hiragana memorization.

Simply the best and fastest way to memorize hiragana. Tested the free version. Memorized in a few MINUTES. That was insane. Ive tried it for a whole month 10 years ago and never got it memorized. 2 days: master hiragana 4 days: master modified hiragana Combine with Anki for even better results. Ps: 7 days later: Using the Katakana app.

A very surprising app

The pictures are dumb and they often dont fit the characters. The little sayings dont make a lot of sense and sometimes the sounds of the English words dont match the hiragana sounds. In fact they are mostly so bad that I remembered them easily and ended up learning the first 30 hiragana in about a half hour. I was amazed at how well it worked. I had a deck of paper flash cards that I used before and after this app and I went from knowing 3 or 4 characters to knowing all of them, literally in a half hour. I recommend this app very highly. The more annoyed you are at the goofy pictures the more you will remember them. It works perfectly.

Doubted it, but it works.

Many other reviewers said this app helped them learn hiragana in an absurdly short amount of time. I was doubtful at first but was soon amazed by my progress. I started out knowing about 5 characters, in half an hour I knew all of them. Real time saver, especially if youre cramming.

Learned in 1 day

10/10 would recommend to anyone who truly wants to learn hiragana. I purchased the katakana version and it worked perfectly as well. Ive been struggling with the Japanese alphabet for a few months and as soon as I began using this app I learned and memorized both alphabets super easily. I never review apps, but I feel I owe it to dr. Moku. Thank you! The pictures made it so easy to retain information! Worth the small fee. It should honestly be more in my opinion lol. Better than any book Ive used.

If youre serious about learning Japanese and katakana....

Get this! Get this app right away! I thought $5 seemed like a lot, but its truly not for what you get! I started off with the Hiragana app (I mastered hiragana in literally a day) and decided to move to this one. Though katakana is a smidge harder than hiragana, the app made it seem just as easy! I was reading and writing within just two days and Im only getting more and more fluent. Trust me and get this app!

A good starting point

As a beginner at Japanese, I did not know where to start. I googled it, and everyone said you should learn hiragana, then katakana. So, I bought this app. Japanese is certainly an intimidating language, so I do recommend that anyone serious about learning it takes a class of some kind. However, if you are teaching yourself, or even if you need to study basic hiragana for a class, this is the only app I would recommend. Prior to purchase, I read the reviews of this app and thought the reviewers were exaggerating, or lying. I thought, "how on earth could you learn hiragana so easily?" Even so, I purchased the app. In only two hours, I had basic hiragana memorized. Now, keep in mind, though this app will quiz you on modified and compound hiragana, it will not teach modified and compound hiragana to you. I searched the Internet for a modified and compound hiragana chart. After drilling myself (k turns to g, s turns to z, t turns to d, etc) I went on a website called realkana.com. After practicing for another hour, I had modified and compound hiragana down. Then, katakana. I bought the Dr. Moku katakana app, and bam, in two more hours, I had basic, modified, and compound katakana down. Both apps are worth the purchase if you really want to learn Japanese. Once youve got these two "alphabets" down, its on to tackling kanji. For this, I purchased a mnemonics book, and, of course, studied hard. Good luck to all of you. This app will definitely help you with your journey, buy it!(≧∇≦)

The best - dont waste your time or money elsewhere

The pictures and word associations helped learn them by heart quickly.

Its a Good App

Edit: Some of the mnemonics from Dr. Mokus Hiragana will help, some will not. Im using this app, Human Japanese, StickyStudy, and Mindsnacks Japanese. StickyStudy has a setting that actually makes you write the kana and that helped me to learn them MUCH faster than this app. If you are choosing between Dr. Moku and StickyStudy definitely go with StickyStudy. I am just starting to learn Japanese, and I bought the Dr. Moku bundle of both hiragana and katakana because they were highly recommended. I want to learn quickly, and this app has helped me to learn faster. Its definitely worth getting if you want to learn the characters and dont have a lot of time! All the other reviewers have talked about its good points, and I think there are a lot of improvements that can be made: 1. In the autoplay function, we should be able to say how many seconds we want to display each character. 2. When doing the quizzes, the "Right!" and "Wrong!" popups that come when you choose a characters name should not cover the character. If I dont know, I guess, and if the character is covered I cant see what I guessed right or wrong about. There should be a Continue button I have to press before I move on to the next question. 3. A few of the characters are blocked by the pictures. (e.g. Hu/fu, chi, ko). Its really important for beginners to see what the whole character looks like. Rather than cover up the character with different colors to make the picture, I would prefer if the whole character was black and the pictures used a colored outline. 4. I really want to be able to play the sound of each character while watching the stroke order. I really hope these improvements are taken into consideration. Thank you.

I just downloaded the app 30 min ago and can already memorize most of them! But, are there no mnemonics to memorize the modified ones? (#×_×)

Please update for iPad Pro

Great app for learning, but doesnt look so great on the iPad Pros screen resolution. An update would be wonderful!

I cant believe has fast I memorized everything.

I memorized all the hiragana characters in less then a week! This app really surprised me, just got the katakana app, cant wait to learn katakana!

Glitch

Everytime I go to take a quiz, it ends 2 questions early and will display however many I got right/... For example, say I got 40 correct, the app says 40/... However, this is an amazing app. I was blown away with how quickly I was able to memorize everything. I can personally guarantee you that there is not a better way in this whole entire world to learn to write Hiragana. This app is truly amazing.

Great app

Outstanding app--simple concept and perfectly executed. Well worth the money.

Nuniunini

I never write reviews, ok. Lemme tell you, Im legit recalling these characters and sounds that accompany them within 24 hours because of this dorky method. I 100% recommend it.
